good afternoon. during the past year, the university has beenthoughtfully reviewing its clinical operations and the community we serve to set a directionfor the future of the university of toledo medical center. i wanted to speak to you today to let youknow that we are completing this review and
Texas Department Of Health Ems, intend to share the path forward with youin the near future. utmc is not closing. we are committed to continuing to provideaccess to quality health care in our community. i appreciate your patience as we set a pathforward for utmc amid a rapidly changing health
care industry nationally. as a university hospital, we have been notonly considering how we meet the needs of our south toledo community, but also ensuringwe meet the clinical training needs of our students. i want to be clear that the academic affiliationis between the university of toledo college of medicine and life sciences and promedicato enhance the training and education of the next generation of medicine. utmc is not involved in that affiliation. while the university’s medical studentswill now have more opportunities for clinical
experiences at promedica facilities, learnersalso will continue to train at utmc. our hospital is strong. the number of patients receiving their careat utmc remains steady with our emergency department treating more than 36,000 patientsin 2016 alone. our department of surgery is busy meetingthe needs of our community, with more than half of our surgeries coming as a result ofour orthopaedics program led by leaders in their field. the hospital’s financial position has improvedand we are seeing the positive effects of operational efficiencies in our business practices.
it is important that we continue to evolveto provide the right health care services needed by our some 80,000 neighbors in thecommunity who count on utmc for their health care. i want thank our leaders, executive vice presidentfor clinical affairs dr. christopher cooper and utmc ceo dan barbee, for their leadershipin attracting and retaining the best staff. together with their dedicated team, they haveset goals that are allowing utmc to grow in quality and access while reducing costs. thank you to all of our university of toledomedical center employees and physicians for your ongoing commitment to quality and thehealth of the patients that you serve.
i look forward to sharing our path forwardin the coming weeks. i encourage all to continue your support ofthis great team of physicians, staff and a university committed to growing the economicvitality and health of this region. thank you.
