Arizona College Of Allied Health

this is our 20th annual wheel-a-thon and it'sput on by the pre-therapy and allied health club on campus. and we are out here to raiseawareness and money for disability on campus. so we raise money, all of our proceeds goto impact program and the ms exercise program. so impact is a program where volunteers comeout on friday afternoons and work with children with disabilities in the pool and in the gymand it's a ton of fun. we are raising money

Arizona College Of Allied Health, for them to put in a lift in their pool andthen for the multiple sclerosis exercise program we're raising money for them to have fun knickknacksin the gym so that they can enjoy their time. it's a wheelchair relay race and we have sixto ten people on a team and they have 20 minutes to go through the course and get as many lapsas possible, your laps is your score.

we also do like a fun competition of who canget the fastest lap and there's a variety of obstacles, we have cones, and then we havestuff that you do every day, activities of daily living. this year it's new, we havea trash bag that you have to put into your trash can, and then we also have laundry thatyou drop off on a table and then a door that you have to open up and go through. now these are stuff that you and i don't thinkabout, we don't think about going through our every day and there's a slight tilt onthe land that we're going up, but when you're in a wheelchair, everything's exemplified, everything's increased and going through a door or even up a slight ramp is way moredifficult than one would think so going through

it raises awareness in that. it's really fun, we went over ramps throughvarious obstacles, through the cones, through the door, laundry, irons, trash, whatever.it's really good for figuring out what it's like to use a wheelchair, right it's rainyso the part where you're supposed to grab is very slippery you have to grab the wheels.it's tricky to go up a ramp, you got to throw your weight forward and lean back. even grabbing the laundry off of the thingwas really hard because you're kind of moving while you're trying to grab them off and itdidn't really work very well so even really simple things are a lot harder.

the most difficult part was probably the weathercomponent of it so the handrails were really slick, it helped to grab ahold of the wheelsbut yeah the ramps were really slick and it was pretty tough to propel ourselves becausewe're not used to using our arms to get around. so that makes me realize probably how difficultsome simple tasks are to just through life and your daily life and how you need to modifythings. and if we didn't have ramps i can't image the type of inaccessible environmentspeople might face with disabilities anyone can participate, today we've had acouple athletic teams, we had gymnastics and volleyball out here and they were struggling, they were struggling with the rain and the ramps. and we also had the health promotionfor people with disabilities lab out here.

we had a ton of fun with them they were goingthrough it and cracking up. right now we have an exercise science class going, we have acompetition with all of those classes to see who could do the best, i think we have fiveexercise science classes out there this year and they are just having a blast out there. having people walk through the quad like thisand seeing the obstacle course going is enough awareness, but if you participate you geta completely different experience, you get to understand how going and turning is justa difficult task in itself. it definitely reinforces why we're here asa department, the movement studies in disability program, and helps give you i think a betterunderstanding from a first hand perspective,

because we work with a lot of individualswith disabilities but we don't necessarily know or can empathize fully with what theygo through every day and just what their lives look like, so this definitely kind of gaveus that link. this year we've done a drawing and a prizewheel, which is brand-new, and we've gotten great support from companies and businesseslocally for donating a bunch of knickknack stuff. next year, we're hoping to get outhere a couple of more obstacles and get the participation up because the student responsehas been great, but i think we can get a lot more out here, a lot more support.
