St. Louis County Health Department, volleyball team while visiting omaha to attend a

tournament. and now the douglas county health department is investigating -- our lena tillett is on the story --

learning what an epidemiologist thinks the virus could be "some of the best athletes are coming and came into omaha this

weekend." for months -- kansas city club team -- club north -- prepared for a huge tournament at

the century link it's an opportunity to play in front of college recruiters -- and stand out as a top player

-- but for some girls on this team -- this past weekend was a nightmare "how four healthy girls get

sickened and incubated at the very same time where they all got up at 4 o'clock in the morning violent vomiting -- i'd like to know how did

that happen?" a parent of one of the sickened athletes -- stacey mcbride -- says her daughter and three other

girls became violently ill on monday -- "they were crippled down on the floor. they didn't think that they could play without throwing

up so there was no reason to play." disappointed about having to sit out -- the similar symptoms raised red

flags for the team-- "it sounded like either food poisoning or something else, you know. and i don't know what it would be but i

said i'm calling the health department." "if someone calls and said that several people are ill we do a pretty intense investigation on

that because we know that it might be an outbreak." the county heath department's anne o'keefe -- says the now

investigating the complaint-- retracing where the girls played and ate over the weekend -- but o'keefe cautioned

from laying any blame so soon -- "the most common cause of outbreaks like this where you've got many people in a group who

are sick with violent vomiting and diarrhea is commonly caused by a virus called norovirus." "a lot of times with norovirus it is so hard.

because it can so easily get on multiple food items and it's hard to narrow down to one item." mcbride says -- she wants answers -- the

high hopes of club north -- halted by an unexplained illness "we had healthy athletes on sunday and on monday morning

they were incapable of playing sick." we're not naming the restaurants that are being investigated -- because the

health department norovirus can be picked up in many ways -- on food, on surfaces or by being around someone who

is infected -- they're now looking into whether people unrelated to the group also have the virus we will be

releasing the results of the investigation when it is complete -- john -- malorie?
