"mr. yoast? my name's alicia and i'll be yournurse today." the simulation lab is awesome. we have simulation unlike anywhere else."we have current abg's for him?" it's an environment where your instructors can watch you and theycan give you immediate feedback, which is something that you don't always have in atraditional clinical setting. here in the lab we can have a concentrated,real busy day.
University Of South Carolina Health Center, you are thrown into a real life situationand you have to act as if you are the nurse. we get to expose them to some things in aconsistent way that we can't with every student in the clinical setting.you just learn how to interact with the patient via your instructor, you're learning how todo the vital signs, you're learning what you
did wrong, what's something that you maybecan do a little bit better. the instructors are always able to give youthe one-on-one interaction that every student deserves.we get a lot of experience with mannequins. they can sweat, they can cough, they can breathe,they can talk, they can do anything that any patient could present you with.they're basically like people in a lot of senses. they have pulses, they have vitalsigns, you can assess just about anything on these guys.they may not look like we do, but they're able to interact with us and talk to us andcry. i mean it's just amazing to see the technology that we have available to us on the campus."thank you." sometimes we have people come in, and we'venever seen them before. they may have been a patient in a hospital, they may have beengiven a scenario beforehand, and they get to improvise, but regardless we have no ideawhat they're gonna say and we have to react professionally and efficiently to do what'sbest for them. you're having the experience of being thenurse. like, you get to wear that rn letter on your name tag before you actually are one.so like, you're calling the shots. the patient care that we have to provide needsto be top-notch, i mean, that's why we're here at usc.this is a unique facility, and not every college gets the opportunity to do this, and you maynot see these experiences in the hospital
but you will feel like you're in a hospitalhere and be able to see more and do more. by the simulation correlating with what we'regoing with in class and what we're learning in clinical, it's really really helpful.once everything starts coming together, it's really just kinda cool.it's unbelievable and i feel really lucky that i get to do this first, and have thishands-on opportunity before just going into a real patient's room.they're making me into a nurse that i really want to be on the floor.
