my name’s tara, i’m from saginaw, mi,i’ve been at a forever recovery for 45 days. i came here because i have been an iv heroinuser for 8 years. i have a 2 year old son that i lost custody of due to my drug use.and the— kind of the last straw— uh, about a month before i came here, i was actuallyshot 8 times. i was shot because i, um, was going to meet a drug dealer and things wentbad, things went wrong and he shot me.

Family Health Center Battle Creek, and after i healed from that, i came to afrto get help. when i got to afr, i remember walking into detox, i was scared, i was angry,i was disappointed with myself that it had to come to this. i felt like i was a defectiveperson, that this place wasn’t gonna be able to fix me, that i’m just different,that i can’t change. and it took some time

for me to become comfortable with being here,but once i quit focusing on how long i was going to be here, i didn’t mind being hereat all. now that i’m leaving today, it’s like i don’t even wanna leave. i’ve realized that there is another way,that i am capable of living a sober life, that i can be happy without drugs. i’m happyall the time, smiling and positive about life. my counselor, her name was stephanie, andshe was great. she never let me shut down, she kept me going. my peers have been amazing,i— i never would have made it through this program if it wasn’t for my peers. i havenever had friends like i have here. my favorite part of afr was, uh, the mrt program.it taught me so much about myself, it’s

not just your typical 12 step program. itdoesn’t focus on your drug, it really focuses on you. it— it taught me about me and helpedme find myself again. if you think that you need to go to treatment, go to treatment,and when you get there, don’t forget that you came for a reason. not everybody getsthat opportunity, you should be lucky to be able to get help because a lot of people wantit that can’t get it.
