andy: the investigation is far from over at this hour. detectives are now looking deep into the suspected shooter's past. armed with two guns today. they say he nearly ended the deputy's life.

i was drinking coffee, then i heard shot. three shots. andy: numerous gunshots had witnesses running for cover. next thing i know, he was downwind. andy: the man suffering from

multiple gunshot wounds, 12 year veteran, corporal bert hazeltine. he is lucky to be alive. that's we understand he was alert and talking at the scene. his vital signs are good. andy: he says the suspected shooter was upset that they

deputy would not let him make a left turn. he left and then returned. he noticed that the suspect had a handgun. the deputy approached him. then he opened fire and shot through the front windshield of his pickup truck.

he pulls the gun out the window. and then shoots with his other hand attempting to take the deputy by surprise. that is an ambush. andy: the deputy was able to return fire but the suspect was not hit.

fellow deputies close by were able to respond quickly. there was a scuffle. they rolled into the ditch. but they arrested him and took him into custody without other shots. two passing vehicles were also struck by bullets.

they were fired by the suspect gun, fortunately no one was injured. he is now facing a number of charges including attempted first-degree murder. he had most recently been living out of a motel in gulfport mississippi.

his criminal history includes domestic violence and aggravated assault. an ongoing investigation here in saint charles parish.
