El Paso County Health Department, among the volunteers, weredozens of employees from the bay pines va healthcare systemincluding members of the executive leadership team. the mission: survey and countas many homeless persons as
possible to better understandthe prevalence of homelessness in the community, assessneeds of the population, and plan for futureresources and strategies to assist those in need. the va has been anamazing partner. you know, in the last fiveto ten years that i've been working in this fieldseeing them come to the table. the number of employees at theva that have gotten involved in today's count is amazing.
every shift, there's beensomeone here from the va. and i don't think that we cando this without their help. without the community's help. it really just sort of showsthe partnership of those two organizations andthe continuum of care, the homeless leadership board,it really requires everyone coming together. we're so happy to have peoplefrom the va here getting involved in this.
during the course of the dayand night teams of volunteers scoured local communities toidentify those living without a place to call home. outside emergencyshelters, in the street, at bus stops, and more,no area was left unturned. i'm happy to be here indowntown st. petersburg with my colleagues from the baypines va healthcare system today, participating in thepinellas county point in time count.
this is an importantannual activity we support to identify homelessliving in our community, so we can work togetherwith our community partners in meeting their needs. everyone knows thatsustainable housing is really a first start to havingpositive health outcomes and that's what we're allabout at the bay pines va healthcare system. according to va officials,bay pines cared for over 5,400
homeless veterans or those atrisk for homelessness in 2016. nearly 2,200 of which werepermanently housed across the bay pines service area whichincludes the florida counties of charlotte,collier, desoto, hardee, highlands, lee, manatee,pinellas and sarasota. nationally, since 2010,veteran homelessness has declined by nearly 50 percent,according to recent data reported by the va and the u.s. interagencycouncil on homelessness.
a big reason for thissuccess, officials say, is the strong workingrelationships they maintain with community partners whoshare the same vision - and that vision to get individualsstruggling with homelessness the help they need. to learn more about homelessveteran services available through the bay pines vahealthcare system, visit www.baypines.va.gov/services/homeless.
